Dog Days of summer: Part 1

Posted by Glamour Mutt on 5/26/2012 to Dog Carriers
Dog Days is a common term referring to the hottest days of summer. But what does your dog do on these steaming hot days that leave their owner sweating? While dogs have sweat glands on their feet, they rely mostly on (excessive) panting to cool themselves off. But there are certain measures you can take to ensure you dog is cool, comfortable and stylish for summer. Cooling pad beds are a fantastic way to keep your dog cool as a cucumber and best of all- it recharges itself so no refrigeration or electricity is required! These chill pads can fold in half, making them easy to travel with. Speaking of traveling, Zuka Travel Bowls are a chic way to keep your dog hydrated. We love these bowls because you can fold them up and squeeze them into the tiniest pockets, yet they will still maintain their shape when you are ready to use them. Another travel dog bowl we are obsessed with is made by Sleepypod and is aptly named the ‘Yummy Travel Bowl’. If the innovative 3-tier design isn’t enough to wow you over, then the BPA-free silicone material they’re made from is sure to impress you. Since they are made from such a unique material, you can freeze them or toss them into the microwave without worry.

Traveling with small dogs is a breeze- as long as you have the correct travel essentials. Adding the Summertime Dog Carrier Cooling Pad can transform any hot stuffy carrier into a blissful tranquil experience. For extra hot environments, consider switching to the Freezy Mesh Summer Dog Carrier, which allows all-around ventilation. If you’re just running quick errands, or want a more casual dog carrier, then the Sporty Sling by Susan Lanci is a fabulous mesh traveler that ensures your dogs comfort while leaving you free of shoulder strain. If you’re new to the world of dog purses, and are seeking a year-round alternative, we highly recommend the Soho Carriers. These bags offer a detachable solid top, which reveals mesh windows (perfect for summer), and also allows you to unzip the mesh so your dog can peak out his/her head to take in all the excitement summer has to offer.

With spring in full swing, Susan Lanci brings us a beautiful new dog collar and harness collection featuring three-dimensional Water Lilies, Petunias, and new two-tone designs!  Like all Susan Lanci Designs, these collections are made with genuine upholstery grade Ultrasuede. Along with the new designs comes three new limited edition Ultrasuede colors: Electric Orange, Electric Pink and Bimini Blue. These gorgeous bright new colors look especially stunning on the Swarovski Crystal Water Lily Step-In Harnesses!  Did you know that Susan's Step-In Harnesses can also be used to secure your dog on car rides? Just snap on the harness with the shoulder strap seatbelt in place for a safe, secure and fashionable car ride. Available in 10 solid colors, the harness is also available in a two-tone series. Our favorite harness color combinations from this new collection include: Black & Perfect Pink and Tiffy Blue and Sun. Not to be outdone, the Pretty Punia Collars are another instant hit for the summer. Many small dog owners prefer the no-choke harnesses, but Susan Lanci's collars can also be used as necklaces, which accent the harness designs. The Pretty Petunias are topped of with a glimmering Swarovski Crystal in the center of each ultrasuede flower. The two-tone trend is heating up for summer and we couldn’t be more excited for the new contrasting Big Bow Harnesses. Our favorites include the Zebra Harness with the Perfect Pink Bow, as well as the Platinum Series. The center of the bows have a shimmering square Swarovski Crystal that catches the light as your dog trots along, casting a dazzling ray of light. These harnesses coordinate perfectly with the plain Ultrasuede leash as well as the Big Bow leashes. To complete your dog’s fashionable new look for spring/summer, we recommend adding a matching hair bow, embellished with Rosebuds or crystals. Big Bow Crystal Two-Tone Dog Harness - Zebra and Perfect Pink

Tips for choosing a Dog Carrier

Posted by Glamour Mutt on 5/12/2012 to Dog Carriers
The perfect dog carrier for you and your dog exists! But with so many to choose from, how do you narrow it down?

When choosing a carrier, consider the following:
  • Do you want your dog to be able to stick his or her head out of the carrier (most dogs enjoy checking out the scenery)  Most Petote carriers have rolldown windows without mesh, to allow your dog to peak out their head!  Other designers like Jaraden have optional zippered mesh on the sides for versatility.
  • Do you plan on traveling by air? Airline approved dog carriers make traveling with your dog comfortable and easy. Some of the top designers, such as Petote, Kwigy-Bo, Cece Kent and Jaraden, have created many of their carriers that fit the guidelines for approval of most airlines (check your specific airlines website to see if your carrier meets their guidelines).
  • Do you want your dog to travel incognito? If so, consider a carrier with windows that have roll-down flaps.
  • How large is your dog, and if he or she is still a puppy, how large will he or she get? If you want to use your carrier for years to come, make sure you are selecting a carrier that will accommodate their approximate full-grown size.
  • How much pocket storage space to you need? Do you plan on storing small items, like your wallet or some puppy snacks – or do you need more room for items such as an ipad.
  • What type of material do you want for your carrier? Italian leather and soft buttery pleather straps are the most comfortable on your shoulder for extended hours of wear, while canvas is durable for dogs that tend to chew on everything in sight. Petote and Cece Kent offer luxurious leather carriers and Kwigy-Bo and Jaraden offer more soft pleather options.
Don’t forget to accessorize! Susan Lanci offers the coziest carrier blankets, perfect for chilly airline travel as well as during the colder months of the year. Many smaller dogs are susceptible to hypothermia, in which case these blankets should be used year-round. Our Summertime Pet Carrier Cooling Pad will keep your pup cool as a cucumber while you’re traveling for long periods and on hot sunny days. Comfort is key when it comes to the interior of your dog carrier, so selecting a soft blanket or cooling pad is essential to keep your dog comfortable, and therefore less finicky!

Fashionable Dog Clothes

Posted by Glamour Mutt on 5/1/2012 to Dog Clothes
Many pet owners love the idea of showing off their pets with fashionable wardrobes. The idea of clothing for dogs began with military dogs, to save the dogs from hot and cold environments. Oh, how far weve come! Now, dressing dogs in tutus, crystal collars and designer bows seems like the norm (at least to some of us dog lovers!) When it comes to dog clothes, there are a huge variety of occasions that call for special attire including clothing designed for parties, weddings, Halloween etc., allowing our special little friends to join in the festivities! Daily varieties may include dog sweaters, coats, shirts, sports apparel and dresses.  Picking out the correct size may seem difficult, but we always recommend using the chest (girth) measurement above all others so that your dog will feel comfortable in their new designer duds. All of our fashionable dog attire is available in a wide variety of sizes, so even your large dog can join in the fun!

There are many considerations when choosing a dogs wardrobe. If your dog spends a lot of time rolling around in the grass, its best to select a material thats durable and colorfast. Our wool Chilly Dog sweaters are especially popular for big dogs during the wintertime. Its always fun to take your dogs personality into consideration when selecting dog clothes (we have a little sassy Yorkie in our office that simply adores cheetah print!) Most dogs that havent worn clothes before may react strangely at first (if youve ever laughed at those youtube videos with the little dogs trying to kick off their new shoes, you know exactly what we mean!) Dogs that are timid to new experiences should be rewarded and praised for their new fashionable look. Many dogs especially love the attention they receive by wearing adorable dog clothing. So, what are you waiting for? Grab a tape measure and let the fun begin!
